One of the critical issues to take into account where circulation of crowds is high, is security. Security is one of the most important prerequisites of a sustainable development. Airports, terminals, shopping malls, cinemas, theaters, concert halls, hospitals, government agencies and institutions where many people visit are among priority destinations where security must be tight. Different systems can be utilized to ensure the security of a location.

Operating principles of security detectors are similar to those of metal detectors, and they serve to spot metal objects which may be used in committing crimes. If the person scanned has a metal object on him/her, WALKTHROUGH SCANNERS or SWEEPING SCANNERS spot the metal in question, and war the security. Thereupon, the level of the sound alert, light, or vibration, the security personnel may decide on effecting a more detailed search of such persons. This prevents the provision of criminal materials inside the protected zone.

These are complemented by "X-RAY" machines found usually in locations which require maximum security, such as airports, border gates, important agencies, and large shopping malls. These detectors stand out with the special reflectors located below the scanning area. This helps them provide visual clues about the type and characteristics of the objects, by providing a color image of the objects located inside a container or package (i.e. bags, luggage), displayed on a computer monitor. This helps only with a limited range though, since the reflectors are a must for this method of scanning to work. Therefore, this capability is not present in other detectors, which lack reflectors placed suitably, making these devices the exception rather than norm, offering services only in security checkpoints, under specific conditions. Such security systems are preferred for busy entrances, where individual checks on packages, bags or luggage would be time consuming.

Another matter to be taken into account is the potential of vehicles to carry, willfully or otherwise, hazardous materials. These threats are controlled with the help of "UNDERBODY SCANNING" systems. Sometimes this is done with the use of a simple mirror arrangement. At others, professional systems making use of cameras and recording devices are used to determine explosives and criminal materials. Another use underbody scanning systems are put to is to spot LPG consuming vehicles in indoors parking lot entrances.
